Charles Magombedze, 31, was on Thursday sentenced to 72 years in prison by a court for serial raping offenses. The regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga had initially pronounced a sentence of 78 years to Magombedze of Chikova Village in Masvingo Province but conditionally suspended six-year from the sentence.
In the course of his initial court appearance on Tuesday, Charles had revealed that he was a member of a satanic cult whose agenda was to spill blood, have unprotected sex and sire children with the same inclination. He pleaded guilty to eight counts of rape but pleaded with the court to hand him a death sentence instead.
However, Zimbabwe’s constitution may only permit the death penalty if the accused is convicted of a murder which is committed in aggravating circumstances. Magistrate Malunga said the accused was deserving of severe punishment as he had behaved like a beast by committing such offenses.
The accused was said to have molested more than 10 victims including a 14-year-old girl and a police constabulary’s wife, and he did these all the while, being armed with dangerous weapons like iron bars, machetes and axes.
He also faces attempted murder charges after stabbing a woman five times in an attempt to rape her as well as other offenses related to theft and unlawful entry.
