According to reports, the Osun State Internal Revenue Service has shut down Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife over the alleged non-payment of tax amounting to about N1.8 billion.
IRS officials led by Mr. Oladipo Babatunde arrived the campus at about 7:00 am and proceeded to lock the main entrance to the campus, popularly known as Road 1, as well as the gate to the Senate Building. with the administrative block and bursary office inclusive.
Whilst confirming the closure of the institution, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the school, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju disclosed that officials had locked the main gate that led to the campus as well as other offices.
According to him, the University had already engaged in discussions with the Osun State Government to how the situation could be remedied.
“We just discovered that tax officials have locked our main entrance gate and the administrative block.
“We are already speaking with Osun State government, and hope to resolve it soonest,” Olanrewaju said.
It can be recalled that the Osun State government had initially issued a 7-day ultimatum to both public and private organizations to come forward and settle their outstanding taxes.
